In order to be installed outdoors, fans must have certain safety features that allow them to be operated in moist or wet areas. Such fans are often called indoor/outdoor ceiling fans because they can be installed inside as well and are great for bathrooms and kitchens where the surroundings may be moist.
You will find two ratings for outdoor fans: wet rated and damp rated. Damp rated fans are adequate for areas that are covered but not directly exposed to downpours of water. Wet rated can be safely operated even in rain and very wet conditions. This type of fan is really nice because it can be cleaned by hosing it down with water.
When choosing the size of your fan, you will need to think about the space of the area to be cooled and the height of the ceiling where it is installed. A standard mount fan has a downrod that drops the fan motor about 3-5 inches from the ceiling. This mount is adequate for ceilings that are 8-10 feet high. For higher ceilings you will need an extension downrod to lower the fan to about 8-9 feet from the floor. If the ceiling is lower than 8 feet, look for a hugger ceiling fan that mounts flush to the ceiling.
The blade span of the fan can be anywhere from 29 inches up to 68 inches. Smaller spans will optimally cool an area up to about 75 square feet. For spaces ranging from 75-225 square feet, look for a fan with a span of 36-44 inches. The very largest fans are ideal for areas up to 500 square feet, or you can consider installing multiple smaller fans. You want to find a model that will efficiently cool the area without overwhelming it with its size.
After determining the mount and size for your outdoor fan, you will find a wealth of colors and styles to choose from. Look for a model that blends in and complements the architecture and decor of your home. You will also need to decide if you want a light on the fan, and if so, select a light kit that will be an attractive addition to your outdoor area.
Always hire a licensed electrician for your fan installation. An electrician should be able to install separate switches for the fan and the light, if you have one. Ask about dimmer switches for the light and speed control switches for the fan as well.
