Suspended Ceilings – What are They?
Suspended Ceilings are used in a majority of modern buildings and is also known as a dropped ceiling. Suspended Ceilings are a secondary ceiling constructed to conceal wiring, pipes, ductwork into what is known as the plenum. Suspended ceilings have been developed to conceal the original ceiling, which may be old, tattered and unattractive. Suspended ceilings give off a very modern sophisticated look, which is vital in today’s society in order for offices and businesses to look professional. Materials used to make the ceilings range from: metal, wood, plastic etc. With different materials used different effects can be created. Many suspended ceilings are used to keep noise at a minimum. This is why they are very popular in schools, offices and university lecture rooms, where production is better when noise levels are low. It is clear to see that suspended ceilings are a very useful instrument and should be used wherever possible.
Suspended ceilings are used in construction and can be used in almost any situation. They can be used in offices, schools, Lecture rooms, even on ships, anywhere where there is a ceiling means that there is possible potential for there to be a suspended ceiling. Suspended ceilings consist of a grid work of metal channels in the shape of and upside down “T”, that is ultimately suspended on wires from the over head structure (in most cases the original ceiling). These ceilings are very easy to install and are spaced in a structural pattern that follows as: 600 x 600mm etc. Each of the different cells is filled with a lightweight acoustic ceiling tile, which drop into the grid, thus giving it the name of a dropped ceiling.
With the power of suspended ceilings one can install the grid to their preference. You can install lighting in each grid either as a square, or tube. You can circulate air through a series of fans and air diffusers through the whole office without losing heat, like you would have without these ceilings. You can also place fire sprinklers wherever you choose. The idea that you can fully customise the suspended ceilings is a major benefit as you simply cut the grid where you want.
Suspended ceilings are also widely accepted because they are a powerful tool when it comes to sound prevention. With sound absorption and attenuation (the gradual loss in intensity of sound) suspended ceilings are found in many music studios and offices, ultimately any environment that wants to limit the noise it produces of noise that would affect them.
From this article it is possible for one to see that suspended ceilings are dropped grids suspended from the ceiling to hide obscure pipes and wires. They are also used to make the environment you are in appear modern and sophisticated. With the power of sound diffusers suspended ceilings are excellent in lowering sound vibrations, making them ideal for offices and schools etc.

Installing a drop box and ceiling fan where none was before?
Our family room is in dire need of better air circulation. I'd like to have a ceiling fan with an attached light installed in the middle of the ceiling. The nearest wiring in the ceiling is a can light by the fire place. The ceiling fan should be placed about 5 feet from where that can-light is. I intend to have an electrician do this work, but would like to have an estimate on how much a licensed electrician would charge for this. I know it involves pulling wire and such. I just need some idea on how much this would run so I know if an estimate is fair. I live in the Nashville area in Tennessee.
Thanks for your input.
Generally, electricians charge somewhere in the $70-$100 per outlet that you have them run wire to. Since it is a can light, the only concerns are how many can lights you have in series (if any) and the switch that you use for those can lights will control the fan also unless a new stretch of wire is ran. The $70-$100 is usually for running wire from a breaker box to a new outlet. The range is due to difficulty, like number of floors, types of walls etc. Hope it helps!
