Ceiling fan installation...?

I installed a simple ceiling fan and it is sitting at an angle. Apparently the hole in which the mounting bracket (in the ceiling) sits is too big and the round bracket hangs down out of the ceiling holding the fan at an angle. One side of the fan in flush with the ceiling and the other is about an inch too low. When the fan is on the blade brackets spin really close the the motor cover. There is no access to the attic. Is there any other way to secure the round mounting bracket in the ceiling on the side that is falling out? Is there any way to patch up the hole (plaster) and make it smaller without this fan eventually vibrating its way through and come crashing down?
